Jackie Chan: 'The days when no one listened to Chinese people have gone'

(China Daily) On Nov 12, Jackie Chan received an honorary Oscar from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles, becoming the first Chinese actor to win the award. The 62-year-old movie star shared his story in an interview with People's Daily.

When he was 22, Jackie Chan went to Hollywood with the hope of becoming an international star. However, he ended up finding it impossible to succeed there using the same style he had developed in Hong Kong.

"In America, I could not even offer a little advice. They would not listen to you. I fought with dedication, but they didn't like it… I designed many movements - for example, jumping over a table.

But they didn't like it. They thought I was like a monkey," Chan recalled of his early days in Hollywood. With his confidence low, he returned to Asia to pursue his dream.

"When I began shooting movies in America, Americans didn't care about my ideas, and no one listened to my opinion. When I rejected some of their requirements, because I knew no one in Hong Kong would watch films shot in accordance with them, they replied, 'Hong Kong is not our market, just forget Hong Kong.' After Hong Kong returned to China, they said 'China is not our market, forget China.' At that time I thought, you cannot look down on the Chinese even if China is not your targeted market," he recalled.

"Today, they ask me what Chinese people like to see. They need to consider every aspect of China because China has gotten strong, and China's film [industry] has gotten strong. The Chinese market has become a big contributor to the global box office. I am really proud of this. The days when no one listened to Chinese people have gone."

In Chan's eyes, there are major differences between the interests of Chinese and American audiences when it comes to film.

"They [Americans] like tough guys like Clint Eastwood, who can knock someone out with just one hit. They think it's manly. But in my films, after hitting someone I will draw back my fist and take a deep breath because of the pain. The audience does not accept this because they don't think you are a hero. Their comedies are hilarious; there is no such thing as action comedy. It's like two different worlds," he explained.

With a deep understanding of movies in both the US and China, Chan shared his thoughts on the globalization of Chinese film.

"We need some internationally recognized films, songs, stars… It takes time for good work and stars to grow. There is no shortcut. We need to create works that will withstand the test of time, which is what I am doing. A hundred years later, I hope people will say China has Bruce Lee, as well as Jackie Chan. That is enough," he said.

JADEN SMITH VOMITS AESTHETICALLY ALL OVER HIS NEW VIDEO IT’S LIKE ‘WESTWORLD,’ BUT WITH MORE PUKE

It looks like Jaden Smith has picked up on the Westworld craze — that, or he’s been rewatching the Back to the Future trilogy lately.
Jaden’s new video for “Fallen” takes us way back to the Wild West. The young artist sings and raps in a ghost town rocking his best Marty McFly outfit, right down to the self-lacing Nikes. He also poses against some beautiful sunsets on the picturesque mesas of the American West alongside his co-star Harry Hudson.
Oh, and all those tweets Jaden’s made about throwing up lately? They finally make sense, as he pukes aesthetically throughout the clip. Leave it to Jaden to make disgusting bodily functions look kind of cool.
“Fallen” appears to be the first track from a new project called Syre, which is also the name of the character Jaden plays in the video. The end credits promise that whatever Syre is, it’s coming soon.

A statement was posted on The Anton Savage Show Twitter account this afternoon outlining the details which led to the parting of ways.
"Over the last year it became clear that my objectives for the show and the new management’s objectives for the show diverged greatly. We disagreed on a move to set music quotas, we disagreed on significant changes to the playlist, we disagreed on topics for discussion, on format, on choice of contributors and we disagreed on the choice of certain guests."
“It led to a situation where we have parted ways.”

Savage took over the 9am to 12pm slot in early 2015 after Ray D'Arcy made the switch to RTÉ.
Today FM have released the below statement in relation to Savage's departure from the broadcaster.

China Bans All Korean Music and Entertainment

China says NO to hallyu (kpop) and anything Korean-related.

Many Korean music artists, groups, and actors often travel to China. The reason? The country is arguably one of Korea’s most profitable entertainment markets. However, these music artists aren’t immune to the worsening crisis between China and South Korea.

China has prohibited all hallyu, or Korean Wave (K-pop), content in the country. Furthermore, Korean stars can no longer star in any Chinese television show. Why? The Chinese government is retaliating against the South Korean government. South Korea made the decision to deploy the THAAD American missile defense system in the country. According to the South China Morning Post,

“A Chinese entertainment corporation has been reportedly fined 17 million won (US$14,460) for pushing ahead with a Korean idol group concert that had not been approved by the Chinese government, and it was ordered to refund ticket buyers double the original ticket price. The entertainment company invited the Korean group and began selling tickets a month before the concert but the Chinese government refused to confirm the show.”

In addition, the Chinese government didn’t approve a new Korean drama series. Furthermore, the government replaced or edited out Korean celebrities in Chinese advertisements. The ban includes any show starring, funded, affiliated, or produced by Korean companies. Korean talent agencies YG Entertainment, SM Entertainment, and JYP Entertainment are losing revenue. The Financial Times said about the issue,
Cosmetics companies that have benefited from extra exposure in China through advertisements and as a result of Korean pop culture’s ubiquity have also suffered. LG Household & Healthcare shares have dropped 5.8 per cent this week, while Amorepacific is down 3.5 per cent.
The eight Mnet Asian Music Awards, or MAMA, will take place this Friday in Hong Kong.  MAMA is hosted by entertainment conglomerate CJ E&M. It’s unclear if China will air the awards ceremony in the country. During a press conference, Shin Hyung-kwan, Mnet’s head of music content business, said,
“It has been 20 years since we started the hallyu business and there has always been some sort of a little problem all the time. We had difficulties when there was a change in Japanese TV industry regulations that would downsize the Korean content market, but we sorted it out.
“We are overcoming the situation again with our partners in Hong Kong and our festival will proceed without a big problem.”

Kareena Kapoor Khan: I have owned the pregnancy

Kareena Kapoor Khan has been a trendsetter of sorts and it stood all the more true as the actress began her journey of motherhood. Unlike most other actresses who would shy away from shutterbugs during their pregnancy, the 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' star was seen out and about town, enjoying every bit of her maternity period. From strutting down the ramp to adorning magazines covers, Kareena flaunted her baby bump proudly.

In a recent interview to Grazia, Kareena went on to spill the beans on how her peers reacted to her active lifestyle during these months. "I believe there's a lot of respect and understanding between me and my family, the media, industry friends or even the audience, because I've kind of owned the pregnancy," she confessed.

Phil Collins sued by ex-wife over claims made in autobiography

Andrea Bertorelli says the singer's book was "the final straw", damaging her reputation and causing her considerable distress.

Phil Collins' ex-wife is taking legal action against the singer over "wholly false statements" made in his recent autobiography.
The Against All Odds singer married his first wife Andrea Bertorelli in 1975 and the marriage lasted for five years.
The couple had a son, Simon, and Collins adopted Bertorelli's daughter Joely.
In his latest autobiography Not Dead Yet, the 65-year old singer details his career at Genesis, his rise to fame as a solo artist as well as his personal life.
This included accounts of his marriages and divorces.

"For a number of years I have been the subject of comments made in the media about my relationship with
my former husband Phil Collins," Bertorelli said in a statement.
She added: "I have variously been portrayed as a homewrecker, a gold-digger and a bad mother.
"The recent publication of Phil's autobiography Not Dead Yet is the final straw."
The veteran British singer has recently announced a comeback tour title Not Dead Yet, Live.
Collins declared he was retiring back in 2011, but in a 2015 interview revealed he had changed his mind.
"I stopped work because I wanted to be a dad at home," he said in a press conference.

"As bad luck would have it, as soon as I retired, my family split up. I didn't have anything to go home to really. That's when I started drinking."
Bertorelli, who divorced Collins on the grounds of adultery, says she has "instructed solicitors to instigate proceedings against both Phil and the book's publisher".
"The book contains a number of wholly false statements about myself and my marriage to Phil which have not only seriously damaged my reputation, but have also caused me considerable distress," she said.
Bertorelli added; "I am a private person and have never sought the limelight, even during my marriage to Phil.
"However, these attacks on my character and integrity are such that I feel compelled to take legal action."
Collins and the book publishers have been approached for comment.
